Grilled Beets - Video Recipe

I was surprised how well Beets came out when grilled over an open flame. They finish sweet, peppery, and tender.

You do have to watch them as they char and blacken easily due to their high sugar content. Mine were done on a gas grill so the fire was easily controlled. I could grill them slowly to check on them. Grilling beets takes as long as a regular hamburger patty, about 3 minutes on each side (depending thickness of the beet slices and the heat of the grill).

Some can handle burnt bits, but if you cannot the charred skin easily slides off.

I still find a bunch of beets for 99 cents per pound, even Farmer's Markets stock them cheaply

I slice beets about half an inch thick and coat the slices with a little oil and salt and pepper, that's it. I like a thick slice for a meaty bite. It's nice how tender the beets become, with a sweet and peppery flavor.

I did not peel the beets for grilling, that's the way I do it when I also grill potatoes. It's okay to peel the beets, too.

I like them as a side dish to any grilled protein. You could make a sandwich with Grilled Beats by adding everything you would to a regular hamburger.

Try adding Grilled Beets to your barbecuing repertoire.

Ingredients

  • Beets - sliced about 1/2 inch thick. Add as many sliced Beets as you like to grill.
  • Olive Oil - any favorite oil. Lightly coat Beets.
  • Salt and Pepper - to taste.

Directions

Wash and slice Beets into 1/2 thickness. I leave the peel on, but okay to remove.

Lightly coat Beets with a favorite oil. Sprinkle on salt and pepper, to taste.

I cooked Beet Steaks on an outdoor gas grill over medium heat. Okay to roast or broil in an oven, or saute in a pan on the stovetop.

Grill for 3 to 5 minutes each side until slices are charred and beets are softened. Beets have a high sugar content so they will blacken. Blacken bits will slide off when slightly cooled if you want to remove them.

Frequent turning of slices will reduce blackened parts.

Great in a salad or just as a side dish. You could even make a Beet Burger with all the typical toppings.

Smokey, sweet, and peppery.
