The $16 Lobster Dinner - Video Review

On the East Coast, Lobster is king. And just last month I found a cheap$kate Lobster Dinner in Levittown, Pennsylvania for 16 bucks! Check out my video below for all the yummy details.

It pays to read the local grocery store ad flyers. This special was from Redner's Warehouse Markets, which ran the week of Father's Day. Holidays are a great time to land grocery deals like this one.

Redner's is a local grocery chain similar to any small town/city markets. I like local grocers because they carry seasonal produce you may only find in nearby orchards, gardens, and ranches or waterways, plus the holiday specials are one of a kind.

Louisiana has Crawfish Season, and in California, Cherry prices drop in early summer, and Avocados are always on sale.

When I saw this Lobster Deal I had to make a video about it. A big 99 thanks to Linda for videoing and co-starring with the Cheap$kate Forager!

Of course, thanks to Redner's Warehouse Markets. It's where I go for groceries when staying in my wife's hometown of Levittown, PA. You can read about their Pennsylvania 50-years plus history here.

How was the $16 Lobster Dinner sale for Father's Day? Darn tasty. The dinner was cooked and ready to heat up. I removed the veggies and whole lobster from the container and steamed them. I would suggest steaming the corn and red potatoes for an extra 5 minutes, then adding the lobster to steam until warm/hot. Of course, you could eat the lobster meat chilled, or at room temperature.

The lobster tail was firm and sweet. Not as tender as fresh-steamed, but still delicious. I liked the claw flesh the best. They were large and loaded with tender, succulent meat.

Pull on the tail to expose the large lobster fillet. I use kitchen shears to cut along the top of the shell, lengthwise, to remove the meat.

While the lobster tail was on the small size, the claws provided as much meat as the tail. I used a nut cracker to get it out. Seafood restaurants often provide a small wood mallet to whack the claws.

All of the claw has tender meat, but it takes a little more digging to get to it.

If you've never peeled a lobster, there are a couple of things to watch for. Like a crawfish, which I grew up eating, the peeled tail meat may have a thin, gritty dark intestine vein along the top to remove.

The lobster claws have a tough, thin, opaque, thumbnail-size cartilage to slide off the meat. The pencil-thin walking legs have small strands of meat, as well. But they do take a bit of work to get at - detach and try squeezing out the meat with a bottle or rolling pin.

Claw cartilage.

The middle body segment, closest to the legs, has a tiny amount of meat to fish out with a small fork or knife tip.

In Louisiana, real local Cajuns detach the head from the tail, and suck the head. A lobster is a bit too large for that, but you can forage for the creamy, green Tomalley in the head/body segments. Chefs prize the Tomalley and add it to a Bisque, Chowder, or just spread it on a cracker like you would Pâté or Caviar.

The Tomalley is the pancreas and liver of the lobster. When you separate the top shell from the body, look for the green goo. It holds a tiny amount of toxins and is usually fine to eat in small amounts. I survived, but you may want to skip it, if you have medical issues.

My lobster's body had bright orange Roe, or tiny lobster eggs that pop with a briny, sweet flavor.

For a clean presentation, rinse the tail meat closest to the body and trim any discolored tail strands.

The corn and red potatoes were steamed, like the lobster, in a broth that tastes of Old Bay Seasoning. That's the way we do it for a Louisiana backyard Crawfish Boil.

The corn was sweet and tender. The red potatoes were soft and well seasoned from the boiling bath.

A sweet Hawaiian Bread Roll was provided - a soft device for sopping up sweet and briny lobster juice.

I've learned to return the day and the day after a holiday sale ends to see if the price has dropped. And this one plummeted to $9 dollars! Since the meal was cooked, I didn't worry too much about spoilage, like iffy uncooked seafood can.

How does this Lobster Meal rate? While not as good as a fresh Lobster Boil, it held up quite well, especially for the price and convience. The meal had the right amout of seafood boil spiciness and salty/black pepper bite.

The $16 Lobster Dinner from Redner's Warehouse Market was a tasty way to celebrate Father's Day, whether you're a dad, or not.

Happy Hour Lobster at Harvest Seasonal Grill & Wine Bar

OMG, right off the bat, my $10 Lobster Sliders for Happy Hour at Harvest Seasonal Grill & Wine Bar in Newtown, Pennsylvania, were fantastic!

My wife, Linda, took me to Harvest Grill when we visited Carol, her 98-year-old mother, in Newtown, Pa., at her assisted living facility. Her mother still likes to dine out, and since it was the afternoon, we sat on the patio for an early Happy Hour. I am always on the lookout for East Coast seafood...at the right price.

If you are familiar with my family food blog stories, I was raised on the Gulf Coast in Texas and Louisiana, where seafood is king. Jumbo shrimp, catfish, blue crabs, and oysters are in abundance, but one thing we do not have there is lobster (unless it is brought from out of state). Here are a couple of food blog examples: I made a slideshow video of Linda's visit to my Mom in Louisiana, and a couple of months ago Linda and I dined cheaply at Under The Pier seafood restaurant in her hometown of Levittown, Pa. (Click on any highlighted names to see my tasty blog posts.)

I never had the local East Coast specialty, Lobster Roll, until Linda brought me to see her family and friends in Pennsylvania (Levittown), New Jersey (Cape May), and New York (Fire Island and NYC).

A Lobster Roll filling is like a minimal Tuna Salad, but made with steamed, chopped lobster meat. The lobster is simply served on a hot dog bun. The lobster is plain, with butter, or mixed with mayo.

At Harvest Seasonal Grill & Wine Bar, the chopped Lobster Salad has barely any mayo; it is all lobster chunks. I detected a mix of claw and tail meat. The Lobster Sliders for Happy Hour were loaded, and two Sliders for $10 is a great deal.

I think the Lobster Salad was served in Brioche mini-buns (instead of a hot dog bun). A slab of Bibb (Butter) Lettuce completed the Slider.

The lobster flesh was tender and moist - the buns were light and fluffy. Nothing to the Lobster Sliders, really, and that's fine. And each bun was stuffed and stacked with Lobster meat - I think these two Lobster Sliders held as much as a normally priced $20 to $30 Lobster Roll.

With such cheap Lobster Sliders, I indulged in a full-priced mixed drink called Harvest Peach Old Fashioned, comprised of Basil Hayden Kentucky Straight Bourbon, Peach Puree, Organic Agave, Angostura Bitters, Soda, and Fresh Peach. The drink was a tasty mix of fruity, plus oak, caramel, and spiced flavored bourbon, and it went down smooth. I did finish the meal with a Happy Hour-priced beer.

Here is a photo of the Happy Hour menu from last month. Since the restaurant has a seasonal menu, some food specials come and go. Check with the restaurant before going to see what's for Happy Hour.

Click on any photo to see it larger.

Linda and I have gone here a couple of times already, and all the food we have tried is delicious, plus the wine and fruit Sangrias are quite flavorful. Click here to see Harvest Grill info and full menu. They have several locations - we went to the Newtown, Pa., one.

So, on the 99 Cent Chef's Cheap$kate Dining Scale of 1 to 9, 9 being best, I give Harvest Seasonal Grill & Wine Bar Happy Hour of two Lobster Sliders a...perfect 9.

On our next visit to Linda's mom, we are definitely hitting the Harvest Happy Hour to see what they are serving next. And, I hope $10 Lobster Sliders are still on the menu?

99 thanks, Linda, for turning me on to a cheap$kate Lobster Slider Happy Hour!!

Lobster Bisque - Deal of the Day

Creamy, rich and seafood pungent, my latest Deal of the Day is a great cold weather soup. Lobster Bisque by Hanover Foods hits the spot and is the right price for this cheap$kate.

My local Dollar Tree stocks it from time to time -- when it's there I like to get a can.

It's only 10.5 ounces of thick soup that directions say to add a can of milk. That's what I did, but next time I would add no more than 3/4 or half a can of milk.

I found it watered down the Lobster Bisque. I wanted a Clam Chowder consistency. But it was still a tasty bowl of goodness.

Click on any photo to see larger.

The bisque was sweet and not too salty as with most canned soups.  The ingredient list starts with water whole milk and cream -- you can really get that rich mouth feel from the milk and cream.

Celery and spices are also listed, but these ingredients are minor. What stands out is the creamy seafood lobster flavor.

While not a wimpy Lobster Bisque, don't expect chunks of lobster for $1. There are a few crumbs of ground lobster in the soup just to let you know they use the real thing.

If you want a meaty soup on the cheap then I would add a few chunks of krab or fake crab. If you have some frozen bay shrimp add that. Hey, go all out and get a small lobster tail !!

This can of Lobster Bisque will not fill you up, so serve it with some crusty bread, a salad or a sandwich. I made a Sliced Turkey Breast Sandwich with melted cheese -- boy was that a great combo.

So how does this Deal of the Day rate on my Cheap$kake Dining Scale of 1 to 9, 9 being best? I give Lobster Bisque by Hanover a strong 7!

While not an East Coast Classic Lobster Bisque, for a buck this will do on a cold winter's day.

Lobster Egg Roll from Dollar Tree - Cheap$kate Video Review

It's a hid and seek time in my latest Cheap$kate Review for a Dollar Tree Lobster Egg Roll. A Cheap$kate Dining Review video is at the end of this blog post, so be sure to watch it and see how the Lobster Egg Roll rates from 1 to 9, 9 being best.

My latest Deal of the Day is a Lobster Egg Roll by Imperial Garden and a Product of the USA. They are showing up in the refrigerated food section of my local Dollar Tree store.

First off, I sought and could not find any lobster. I did run across a little fake crab though. And I mean very little. But there is a subtle seafood flavor to the filling.

The filling is mainly shredded and sauteed cabbage, which is fine really, most egg rolls are. The cabbage is plentiful and quite tasty. It's cooked soft and seasoned well. Other ingredients include: onion, carrot, garlic and celery. Sesame oil and mirin add extra flavors.

Click on any photo to see larger.

But if lobster is listed as the second or third ingredient, then I was hoping (against my better judgment) that there would be a small piece of lobster or two thrown in. All I tasted was a few minuscule flakes of fake krab. And I tested 3 of these Lobster Egg Rolls.

A small flake of fake crab, or krab.

I am a fan of fake Krab and use it in a tasty Mexican-style Black Bean & Seafood Ceviche and a sushi California Roll. Fake crab, or Krab (pictured below,) is ground and processed white fish, made to look and taste like real crab (click here to read about it) and costs just 2 to 4 bucks per pound, compared to expensive real crab prices.

And I did an autopsy on the Lobster Egg Roll, and put on my reading glasses, too, in search of lobster. If it was there I couldn't see any. Maybe it's ground so small that it just blends in with all the sauteed veggies?

What this Egg Roll lacks in Lobster, it at least makes up in quantity. This is an extra large Egg Roll the size of a fast food burrito, at about 6 inches long, so most will be satisfied and stuffed.

It's a relief that the crunchy wonton skin of the egg roll wrap is tasty - it has that deep-fried-in-oil lusciousness.  Now because I microwaved the Egg Roll the wrap was a little mushy. Next time I would let it reach room temperature and either heat it up in a frying pan or bake it, according to the package directions.

You get a small packet of sweet and sour sauce. It is very good with a mainly pineapple juice flavor with just a little sour vinegar. It goes well with the sauteed veggies and egg roll wrapper.

I thought I would take a chance with a Lobster Egg Roll from the Dollar Tree -- oh, well, I should have know better. Next time I'll just stay with regular pork or veggie egg rolls.

As a basic Egg Roll for a buck, this is an okay Deal of the Day. Where it fails is the non-existent lobster and very little fake crab.

I'm giving this Deal of the Day a double rating. That is, one rating for the seafood filling and another rating for the veggie stuffing - it's a 2fer!

So on the 99 Cent Chef's Cheap$kate Dining Scale of 1 to 9, 9 being best, I give Imperial Garden Lobster Egg Roll a...? Hmmm, just watch the video below to see how it rates!
