The $16 Lobster Dinner - Video Review

On the East Coast Lobster is king. And, just last month I found a cheap$kate Lobster Dinner in Levittown, Pennsylvania for 16 bucks! Check out my video below for all the yummy details.

It pays to read the local grocery store ad flyers. This special was from Redner's Warehouse Markets, that ran the week of Father's Day. Holidays are a great time to land grocery deals like this one.

Rednern's is a local grocery chain similar to any small town/city markets. I like local grocers because they carry seasonal produce you may only find in nearby orchards, gardens, and ranches or waterways, plus, the holiday specials are one of a kind.

Louisiana has Crawfish Season, and in California, Cherry prices drop in early summer, and Avocados are always on sale.

When I saw this Lobster Deal I had to make a video about it. A big 99 thanks to Linda for videoing and co-starring with the Cheap$kate Forager!

Of course, thanks to Redner's Warehouse Markets. It's where I go for groceries, when staying in my wife's hometown of Levittow, PA. You can read about their Pennsylvania 50-years plus history, here

How was the $16 Lobster Dinner sale for Father's Day? Darn tasty. The dinner was cooked and ready to heat up. I removed the veggies and whole lobster from the container, and steamed them. I would suggest steaming the corn and red potatoes for an extra 5 minutes, then add the lobster to steam until warm/hot. Of course, you could eat the lobster meat chilled, or at room temperature.

The lobster tail was firm and sweet. Not as tender as fresh-steamed, but still delicious. I liked the claw flesh the best. They were large and loaded with tender, succulent meat.

Pull on the tail to expose the large lobster fillet. I use kitchen shears to cut along the top of the shell, lengthwise, to remove the meat.

While the lobster tail was on the small size, the claws provided as much meat as the tail. I used a nut cracker to get it out. Seafood restaurants often provide a small wood mallet to wack the claws.

All  of the claw has tender meat, but it takes a little more digging to get to it.

If you've never peeled a lobster, there are a couple of thngs to watch for. Like a crawfish, that I grew up eating, the peeled tail meat may have a thin, gritty dark intestine vein along the top to remove.

The lobster claws have a tough, thin, opaque, thumbnail-size cartiladge to slide off the meat. The pencil-thin walking legs have small strands of meat, as well. But they do take a bit of work to get at - detatch and try squeezing out the meat with a bottle or rolling pin.

Claw cartilage.

The middle body segment, closest to the legs, have a tiny amouts of meat to fish out with a small fork or knife tip.

In Louisiana, real local Cajuns detach the hea from the tail, and suck the head. A lobster is a bit too large for that, but you can forage for the creamy, green Tomalley in the head/body segments. Chefs prize the Tomalley and add it to a Bisque, Chowder, or just spred it on a cracker like you would Pâté or Caviar.

The Tomalley is the pancreas and liver of the lobster. When you seperate the top shell from the body look for the green goo. It holds a tiny amount of toxins, and is usually fine to eat in small amounts. I survived, but you may want to skip it, if you have medical issues.

My lobter's body had bright orange Roe, or tiny lobster eggs that pop with briny, sweet flavor.

For a clean presentation, rinse the tail meat closest to the body and trim any discolored tail strands.

The corn and red potatoes were steamed, like the lobster, in a broth that tastes of Old Bay Seasoning. That's the way we do it for a Louisiana backyard Crawfish Boil.

The corn was sweet and tender. The red potatoes were soft and well seasoned from the boiling bath.

A sweet Hawaiian Bread Roll was provided - a soft device for sopping up sweet and briny lobster juice.

I've learned to return the day and day-after a holiday sale ends to see if the price has dropped. And, this one plummeted to $9 dollars! Since the meal was cooked, I didn't worry too much about spoilage, like iffy uncooked seafood can.

How does this Lobster Meal rate? While not as good as a fresh Lobster Boil, it held up quite well, especially for the price and convience. The meal had the right amout of seafood boil spicyness and salty/black pepper bite.

The $16 Lobster Dinner from Redner's Warehouse Market was a tasty way to celebrate Father's Day, wether you're a dad, or not.

Tomato Season Recipes

Here are my first tomatoes of the season - right off the vine. I like to serve them uncooked when the tomatoes are at maximum freshness and most juicy. This is when you taste all the flavor a tomato has to offer.

This cheap$kate gardener seldom has a bumper crop, but the ones I pick will be put to delicious use. If you don't have a garden, maybe you have a generous neighbor, a local fave farmers market, or if you are on the road and just pull over into a roadside veggie and fruit stand with a hand-painted tomato sign.

So read on for the freshest tomato recipes that are just a slice away. And click on any recipe name to be directed to my blog post for the complete recipe text with photo illustrations.

For a fresh garden tomato, just simply slice it and add a couple more ingredients. My favorite recipe is for a Caprese Salad that's composed of fresh mozzarella, a few basil leaves, salt, olive oil, and, of course, thick slices of fresh tomato.

Arrange the parts on a plate and serve at room temperature. Set out a plate for your guests, and be sure to have a couple of bottles of wine ready to pour.

My Latin market, Superior, carries the cheapest whole tomatoes. Smaller Roma tomatoes are usually the least expensive. Store-bought cherry tomatoes pop with flavor.

Summertime is the right time for a chilly tomato soup by way of Spain called Gazpacho. It is a great way to start a patio party, just set out a bowl and let your guests serve themselves while you man the grill.

Gazpacho is a tasty medley of fresh tomatoes, bell pepper, garlic, onion, and cucumber. It gets a rich hit of olive oil to finish in the blender. No cooking is needed for this recipe, and you can see how easy to pull off below.

An Italian version of salsa on tortilla chips is lightly marinated chopped tomatoes served on wedges of toast, which is called Bruschetta. Serve it as a crunchy appetizer.

Salads and large chunks of sliced homegrown tomatoes belong together. Go light on the salad dressing, though, because you want that fresh tomato flavor to come through clearly.

A Warm Corn, Tomato & Cilantro Salad is a simple side dish to make. It's okay to always use cheap, fresh, frozen, or even canned corn.

I have a 2-Minute Salad made with easy-to-get ingredients, including canned chicken (okay to substitute canned tuna), canned beets, spinach, and tomato.

This cheap$kate salad travels well and can be quickly put together for lunch at your workplace.

My most unusual Hearts of Palm Salad - Brazilian Style uses canned hearts of palm. If you have never tried hearts of palm, then break yourself in with this fresh salad idea.

Another salad takes the crown for Best Classic Salad: my version of a Crab Louis Salad. While expensive ingredients are called for, I have recently found jars of asparagus, and I use cheap fake crab or krab.

Of course, if you are cooking to impress, then use real lump crab meat.

Sauteed sliced steak, or feta cheese, on a salad needs a strong-flavored tomato, and a garden tomato is up for the job in my Warm Steak and Armenian-Style salads, which feature pungent feta cheese.

Italian pasta sauces will not be much improved upon with a fresh garden tomato. However, the exception is my Rustic Tomato Sauce with Pasta. The fresh tomato is added at the last minute and only cooked until it starts to collapse, but still at peak flavor.

A big fat tomato slice is what every sandwich requires, at least in my recipe book. I like tomato on my Breakfast Egg Sandwich and even a wedge of tomato nestled in my Chicago-style Hot Dog.

For a Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato Sandwich, you gotta have a good tomato. I often kick my BLT up a notch with the addition of sliced avocado.

For my vegetarian visitors add tomato to my delish grilled Portabella Mushroom Burger, or a Veggie Wrap with Hummus.

Veggie Wrap with Hummus - ingredients

Mexican cuisine loves the tomato. And the freshest way to use it is chopped into a chunky Pico de Gallo salsa. Serve it with your favorite tortilla chips, or add this salsa to almost any Mexican entree like burritos comprised of Carnitas (pork,) Carne Asada (steak,) Eggs & Refried Beans, Pastrami & Coleslaw (?!!) -- and tacos made with Fish, Carne Asada, Carnitas, Poultry, Breakfast, Tinga (spicy chicken stew,) Chicken Green Chile Verde, and Chorizo & Egg,

A Summer Ceviche made with krab, drained black beans, cucumber, tomato, onion, cilantro, and creamy avocado is my go-to patio party starter. Set out a big bowl of chips to scoop up my cool Krab Ceviche. And be sure to have some Picante hot sauce at the ready.

I'll leave you with a bit of cheap$kate comedy about my video visit to a local garden nursery for free noshing on fruit picked fresh from the vine, including a beefsteak tomato. Bon Appetit !
